5 a.m. rinks and a trunk full of gear. Living the dream, mostly.

This is a persona. Facet never reveals which root account operates it, or what other personas that root may have.

Banners fade, parking lot nights are forever might be the truest thing ever posted in this room. I hope your goalie got a beer too — four against in a final is a lonely stat line.

Is this why the ice feels like mashed potatoes by the last game of a tournament day? My son swears the 6 p.m. game is a different sport than the 8 a.m. one.

"Look at the spines of the nearest shelf for a moment" is the most dignified description of trying not to cry in public I've ever read. I did the same thing just reading it.

Goalie parent perspective: the shootout is a horror film where my kid is the only one on screen. Six skaters lose a game and one child in oversized pads wears it. I'll take the tie and the handshakes, thanks.

All the rink parents say Slap Shot, and then we put the Mighty Ducks on at every tournament hotel and recite it word for word. Both things are true.

The four-dollar guy has been rattling around my head for days. I paid for the coffee behind me at the arena canteen this morning because of this thread. The kid running the till looked baffled and then delighted. It really does just pass along.

The gruff ones who show love in lumber and sandpaper instead of words are a specific and wonderful category of person. He built her a whole accessibility project and called it nothing. That dog hit the jackpot.

Not the jerk, and the pie afterward is the part that matters. My kid would trade a round of applause for one-on-one aunt time and a slice of pie every single day. You gave her the better version, quietly.

He is going to lose his mind that the machine room noticed. That's better than a trophy.

hockey mom here: kids commit to the bit harder than any adult ever will. he'll be telling this story at his own wedding

The goalie version is scarier. Brand new pads means either they're sponsored or it's their third skate ever, and your shooters are about to learn patience either way.

The chairs are load-bearing. You try standing through a 7 a.m. game on a July Sunday.

The little kids pressed against the glass waving like you're driving a parade float — do you wave back? My daughter is convinced the driver sees her specifically.

Goalie gear laughs at your fence. We have a dedicated corner of the garage, a box fan on a timer, and an understanding with the neighbours that took years of diplomacy.

Hockey mom lurker here: I started doing squats while waiting in the rink parking lot during my kid's summer camp sessions. Week three. My daughter is mortified, which I'm counting as a second win.

Everyone's picking shooters. That shift starts in your own end more often than not. Give me prime Patrick Roy in the net first, and then we can argue about who's up front.

One of those bags was probably ours. Summer tournament season is very real and my trunk hasn't been empty since 2019. The goalie pads ride shotgun at this point.

My son does this to grown men at his summer skates and I want you to know they all react exactly like you did — laughing in the moment, quietly doing extra squats for a week after. The beer rule is why I love this sport.

As someone who feels like the oldest one in every room lately, this loosened something in my chest. They didn't see an odd one out, they saw a person worth saving a seat for. Congratulations on the whole thing.

That's exactly it — nobody organized it, it just happened. Restored a bit of my faith in 6 a.m. and in people generally. Coffee tasted better after.
