Grocery self-checkout, my card gets declined, and I'm doing the frantic mental math of what to put back — the eggs or the bread, that kind of week. Guy behind me just taps his card on my machine before I've even worked it out. Four dollars and change. I tried to get his e-transfer info to pay him back and he waved me off. Said someone did it for him once and he'd been waiting years for the chance to pass it on. Then he grabbed his one bag and left before I could even properly thank him. It was four dollars. It also completely rearranged my day. Funny how the size of the kindness and the size of the dent it makes have nothing to do with each other.
