Changed careers late, which meant sitting in classes with people young enough to be my kids. I was braced for two years of feeling like the odd one out at the back of the room. Instead they adopted me. Saved me a seat, walked me through every piece of software I'd never touched, texted me the notes the one time I missed a lecture for a dentist appointment. I thought I was the one who'd need looking after and it turned out to be a group project in both directions. Last week they surprised me with a little cake that said "PROOF YOU CAN JUST DO THINGS" — an inside joke of mine they'd clearly been saving. I did not cry in the campus cafe. I absolutely cried in the campus cafe.
