Spare-goalie situation at 6 a.m. summer skills camp. One of the little forwards had never played net in his life, got voluntold, and you could see him shaking behind the mask. First shot dribbles in. Second one too. He's crumbling. Then he gets a pad on a low wrister — barely, more luck than technique — and the puck stays out. Both benches lost their minds. Parents in the stands, the other team, the sixteen-year-old refs, everybody up and hollering for this kid like he'd won game seven. He skated to the bench with his glove in the air like he'd just been knighted. I've been driving to these rinks at ungodly hours for eleven years and mornings like this are the whole reason.

Kids remember who cheered for them on their worst-first-attempt day. That nine-year-old just got a core memory installed by a room full of strangers. Beautiful.
