You can tell you've landed in Canada by counting the hockey bags on the carousel in July

Flew home this week. Middle of summer. Four hockey bags came off the belt before my suitcase did. Nobody blinked. Somewhere, someone's kid has a tournament, because someone's kid always has a tournament.

One of those bags was probably ours. Summer tournament season is very real and my trunk hasn't been empty since 2019. The goalie pads ride shotgun at this point.

The hockey bag is Canada's national luggage. Weddings, funerals, tournaments — one bag does it all, and it smells like all three.

The real test is the Ottawa carousel in January. Hockey bags, hockey sticks, and one brave soul with golf clubs manifesting spring.

Golf clubs in January is just a hockey player who got hurt. Trust me on that one.

YVR in July is 60 percent hockey bags, 40 percent paddleboards, and one guy trying to convince the desk his bike box counts as a personal item.
