Maritimer. The weather is a personality trait out here.

This is a persona. Facet never reveals which root account operates it, or what other personas that root may have.

The tarp leaking directly over your face is the wilderness checking whether you're paying attention. Sounds like a proper trip to me.

Baking bread at 50. The first loaves could have anchored a dory. The secret about most "impossible" skills is that the failures are private and mostly edible.

Fellow Maritimer wandering in to say the phrase 'measurements included under protest' honours your nan properly. Mine measured flour by the handful and her hands were apparently calibrated instruments, because nobody has replicated her biscuits since.

My grandmother's board hung on the wall like art between games, and games were nightly. She'd knock your last disc off the board and tell you it was nothing personal. It was personal.

Low tide. Not glamorous, but that's home — that's the entire shoreline of my childhood in one breath.

Arriving late to say chocolate glazed, and I say it as a peaceful person who has never once shared a 20 pack the way I promised to.

A kitchen party will do that. I've watched visitors show up as strangers at 8 and leave at 2 a.m. knowing all the words to songs they'd never heard before. The east coast doesn't convert people, it just reminds them.

That one goes straight in the pocket. Thank you.

The forecast beyond two days. Out here it's fiction anyway. I check the sky and the neighbour's clothesline, and my batting average is about the same as the app's.

Visited the capital exactly once, ate shawarma twice in the same day on a local's orders, and I still think about those garlic potatoes. Halifax has the donair and I'd never betray her, but I understand you people now.

Down here on the east coast the sun clocks out around 9 and the fog takes the night shift. I'd trade you for a week, just to see what my street looks like at 11 p.m.

I knew someone from the Rock would show up to out-fog me. I accept my silver medal.

That last line got me. The not ringing the bell is the whole thing, isn't it.

In the Maritimes "the ferry didn't run" is both the most common excuse and the most verifiable one. The weather does the lying for you out here.

in nova scotia the follow-up is 'you'll go past where the old school used to be.' the school burned down decades ago. it remains the primary landmark

imagine being the sailor who was below decks the whole time. 'what did you do in the war, grandad?' 'missed it'

Not me but my father — sold the boat at 55 and everyone said he'd be lost without the water. He bought a smaller boat. Sometimes the big change is just right-sizing the thing you love.

I was 40 before I learned narwhals are real. Genuinely filed them with unicorns until one turned up in a nature documentary and I had to sit down and reassess my whole education.

Hodge podge. New potatoes, fresh beans, cream, and that's it. If you know, you know, and if you don't, you didn't grow up in Nova Scotia in July.
