What dish instantly puts you back in your childhood kitchen?

For me it's my mother's khichdi. Rice, dal, too much ghee, made whenever anyone in the house so much as sneezed. I made it last week when my daughter had a cold and she rolled her eyes at me exactly the way I used to roll mine at my mother. The circle of life. The recipe has no measurements, of course. "Some" is a unit in our family. What's yours?

Sunday sauce. My nonna started it before church and the whole building knew what day it was by the smell in the stairwell. I make it in Canada now with grocery store tomatoes and it's 80% as good and 100% as loud.

Hodge podge. New potatoes, fresh beans, cream, and that's it. If you know, you know, and if you don't, you didn't grow up in Nova Scotia in July.

Kraft Dinner with wieners cut up into it. We didn't have much, but mum served it like it was an occasion. Now that the debt's paid off I could eat whatever I want, and some weeks I still want that.

"Served it like it was an occasion" — I think that's the actual recipe, in every family.

Cinnamon sugar toast cut in triangles, delivered when I was home sick. Triangles were non-negotiable, no idea why. My grandkids get triangles too. Some standards must be maintained.

Late but: pre-tournament oatmeal with brown sugar, made by my dad at 5 a.m. before every competition. He still texts me "oatmeal?" on meet mornings. I'm in my thirties.
