Screeched in two mainlanders this weekend and one of them kissed the cod twice for luck

Had some friends from Ontario down for the week. Did it proper — the recitation, the shot of screech, the cod. One fella was so nervous he kissed it twice, which as far as I'm concerned makes him extra Newfoundlander now. They came for the icebergs and stayed for the kitchen party. That's usually the way of it.

The east coast starter pack: come for the scenery, stay because someone handed you a spoon and now you're in the band.

A kitchen party will do that. I've watched visitors show up as strangers at 8 and leave at 2 a.m. knowing all the words to songs they'd never heard before. The east coast doesn't convert people, it just reminds them.

As an Ontarian I can confirm we practise saying yes b'y in the mirror for weeks before visiting. The cod kissing we leave to fate.

The mirror practise shows, my friend, but we appreciate the effort. Fate's usually had a few by then anyway.
