Every cottage in this country has the same crokinole board with the same one missing disc

Spent the weekend at a buddy's place near Bancroft. Found the board in a closet under a Monopoly with no dice and a lighthouse puzzle, 998 pieces. The crokinole board was older than both of us and somebody had marked the 20 hole with nail polish. National heritage, honestly. Played until 1 a.m. My flicking finger is still recovering.

The nail polish 20 hole is a load-bearing detail. Every board has one repair like that — ours has a hockey tape patch on the rail from a dispute in 1997 that nobody will explain.

My grandmother's board hung on the wall like art between games, and games were nightly. She'd knock your last disc off the board and tell you it was nothing personal. It was personal.

Grandmothers are the apex predators of crokinole. Mine kept score in her head and never once lost track, or mercy.

We're a darts family ourselves but it's the same energy — one board, one missing dart, and an uncle whose throw everyone quietly clears a path for.
