For the record, no rink manager enjoys ending parking lot night. We just have to lock the gate eventually. Some of us sit in the office an extra twenty minutes to let it breathe.

That's exactly it. A full day of skates chews up the surface, and the building warms up with all those bodies in it. The last game of the day is played on the rink's tired legs, same as everyone else's.

Reading this from the machine room: I've made ice for future pros and for Tuesday night beer leaguers, and the ice can't tell the difference. But if it's one shift for everything, you send whoever wants it most. That's usually not the most famous name on the list.
