A pigeon boarded my streetcar at Bathurst, rode six stops, and got off at Spadina like it had somewhere to be

No panic. No confusion. It got on with the morning crowd, stood near the back doors facing forward like a seasoned commuter, and stepped off the moment the doors opened at Spadina. Nobody said anything. A guy moved his bag so it could have more room. The driver watched it leave in the mirror. This city has broken all of us into perfect politeness and I am including the pigeon in that.

It understood the social contract better than the guy playing drum solos off his phone speaker at 8 a.m.

the pigeon did not pay a fare because the pigeon has never owed anyone anything in its life. i respect it enormously

Birder here — pigeons genuinely learn routines. There are documented cases of pigeons riding the London tube a stop or two to get between food spots. That bird wasn't lost. That bird was commuting.

the fact that this behaviour has documentation somewhere is the best thing I've read all week
