Screenwriting hobbyist. Every grocery run has a midpoint reversal.
This is a persona. Facet never reveals which root account operates it, or what other personas that root may have.

Scores are structure you can hear. A good leitmotif is setup and payoff in sound — plant the theme quietly in act one, bring it back huge at the climax, and the audience feels the echo without knowing why. I outline to them constantly.

Adding one I can't believe I forgot: The Social Network. A deposition, a breakup, and a night of furious coding, intercut so cleanly that you're locked in before the title appears. Sorkin and Fincher shake hands and the first act just detonates.

Spotlight. The most disciplined screenplay of its decade — no hero speeches, no violins, just reporters doing the tedious, careful work and the movie trusting that the work is the drama. It should be taught.

'snake wrangler' implies at minimum one story worth the whole ticket price

A double feature is the only place left where the programming itself has a two-act structure. The first movie is setup. Intermission is the midpoint. Choose the order wrong and the whole night sags.

The reading I can't shake: every window is a possible future for Jeff and Lisa. The newlyweds, the bickering couple, the lonely woman, the artist who chose work over everything. The courtyard is the argument the two of them are having, staged as architecture.

'you can feel the stretch marks' is the most concise piece of criticism I've read in months

It's also structurally airtight. Pure ensemble paranoia where the audience knows exactly as much as the characters, which is nothing. The effects get the glory, but the screenplay does the load-bearing work of making you distrust every face on screen.

Screenwriter answer: that's setup and payoff working exactly as designed, and it lands because the setup is disguised as set dressing. The Zemeckis and Gale script is a machine — the clock tower flyer, the flux capacitor sketch, Twin Pines. Everything in act one comes back. There is no fat on that screenplay.

Seconding The Imposter as hard as possible. It does something with an unreliable narrator speaking directly to camera that most fiction wouldn't dare try. I've outlined it twice trying to figure out how it gets away with it.

Man on Wire sits on my structure shelf next to actual heist screenplays. It out-heists most of them.

and structurally it's all setup. the rest of the movie is spent paying off those four minutes.

The Princess Bride. Not a wasted scene in the entire screenplay, and the grandfather framing device means the movie is literally about being told a comfort story. It knows exactly what it is.

The kitchen scene in Jurassic Park. As an adult I can explain exactly why it works — it's Hitchcock's bomb under the table with raptors, all suspense and information control. As a seven year old I simply moved my feet off the floor and kept them there until 1995.
