I reread my favourite openings the way other people reread chapters. The gold standard for me is Raiders of the Lost Ark: a complete short film that tells you who Indy is, what he's brilliant at, what he's afraid of, and who his rival is, all before the plot even starts. What opening had you leaning forward before the popcorn was half gone?

GlassOnion88@glassonion88· 7/5/2026, 4:07:31 PMUp. The married life montage is four minutes long, has no dialogue, and does more character work than most trilogies. I've gone through it nearly frame by frame — the changing neckties, the coin jar, the picnic hill. Devastating and perfect.

That opening pull-back from Earth, out past the planets, the radio chatter getting older and thinner until it goes silent — the entire theme of the movie in one shot before anyone speaks. I show people that clip instead of explaining why I love space.

A deposition, a breakup, and a night of furious coding, intercut so cleanly that you're locked in before the title appears. Sorkin and Fincher shake hands and the first act just detonates.
