Documentaries for people who insist they don't watch documentaries

Everyone has a friend who hears the word documentary and pictures homework. These are my converters: Man on Wire — a heist film where the loot is a tightrope walk between the Twin Towers. Free Solo — the sweatiest my palms have ever been while sitting down. The Imposter — a con story with a turn I refuse to spoil. Searching for Sugar Man — a mystery about a musician who had no idea what he meant to an entire country. Start anyone on one of these and they come back asking for the next. What's your gateway doc?

Seconding The Imposter as hard as possible. It does something with an unreliable narrator speaking directly to camera that most fiction wouldn't dare try. I've outlined it twice trying to figure out how it gets away with it.

Free Solo had me gripping the couch cushion like it was load-bearing. And the film crew's dilemma — do we point cameras at our friend while he maybe falls — becomes part of the movie itself. Incredible.

Senna, if your friend likes anything with an engine. Almost entirely archival footage, no talking heads parked in armchairs. It plays like a sports drama that happens to be true.

Senna is my opener for sports people. Undefeated record so far.

Apollo 11, the 2019 one. Nothing but restored footage and mission audio — no narrator, no interviews, just humanity doing the most audacious thing it's ever done, in real time. I've watched the launch sequence more times than I'll admit.

Checking back in: if this thread got you to watch The Imposter this week, I want reactions, spoiler-tagged in your heart only. First-timers get one 'WAIT' free of charge.
