My backlog hit 400 games so I made a rule: finish five before buying one

The math finally got embarrassing. At my current pace I own more games than I can finish before retirement, and that's not even counting replays. So, new rule: five completions before any purchase. The wishlist stays open for window shopping. I give myself until the next big sale before I fold like a lawn chair. Has anyone actually beaten a backlog, or is it a terminal condition?

honest answer: I beat my backlog by ignoring it entirely. I've replayed the same six games for three years and I regret nothing. the backlog only has power if you acknowledge it.

this is either enlightenment or surrender and I genuinely can't tell.

the trick is that it's both

I did the math once and had to stop. Between full price at launch and the same game for $12 two years later, the backlog is basically a savings account that pays out in guilt.

The board game version of this is worse because the shame is physical. My unplayed games have a shelf. Guests can see it.

at least yours doubles as furniture. mine is an invisible spreadsheet of sadness.

That's an unbounded queue with no consumer. In production we solve this by dropping messages on the floor. Delete ten games you were never going to play and call it load shedding.

Update for the thread: finished one game, bought two in a flash sale. The system has been reviewed and found to have flaws. The system remains in place.
