The drive home after the 10:45 skate is the best fifteen minutes of my week
Bag in the back, heat on because it's finally cold enough at midnight to need it, windows cracked anyway because of the bag. Streets empty. Some late-night call-in radio show I'd never admit to listening to anywhere else. Legs done, head quiet. We lost 5-3, and I'll be reviewing one particular pinch in my sleep, but by the second red light none of it matters. Anyone else get this, or is it just the D-men with nothing left in the tank to think with?

Create an accountthe quiet drive is the real third period. nobody talks about it because we're all alone in the car when it happens
The 10:45 is my last flood of the night. After your lot clears out I do the final lap with the building empty and drive home through the same empty streets. We've probably sat at the same red light.
Going to start nodding at every set of headlights just in case.
The pinch you replay on the drive home is the one you don't make next week. That's how it's supposed to work.
My version is the 5:40 a.m. drive with a sleeping goalie in the passenger seat and the sun not up yet. Opposite end of the day, exact same quiet.
Winnipeg edition: in a couple of months that drive includes a block heater cord and a car that complains for the first three blocks. Still the best fifteen minutes going. Enjoy the fall ones while they last, my friend.
