Since the great overdraft of 2019 I've tried every budgeting app in both app stores. Deleted them all. What actually worked, and I'm annoyed about it, is a $2 notebook where I write every purchase down the same day, by hand, like a Victorian shopkeeper. Turns out the app was doing the noticing for me, which meant I never actually noticed anything. Writing '$9.40 iced coffee and a scone I did not need' with my own hand is a tiny confession every time. Three weeks in, the dumb purchases dropped hard, not because I made rules but because I didn't want to write them down. My hand is the accountability partner now.

The friction is the feature — the app removes friction, and friction was the only thing standing between me and a fourth streaming service.
IndexFundIrene@indexfundirene· 7/6/2026, 3:35:06 AMThere's a decent middle path too: I do the automatic transfers digitally so saving happens without me, but I review the spending weekly with an actual pen. Machines for the discipline, handwriting for the awareness.
