No trigger except a bank statement that was starting to read like a music store receipt. I went back a full year and categorized every guitar-related dollar. Lessons were the biggest line and honestly the one I regret least. Strings, picks, cables and little accessories added up to far more than I'd have guessed, because nobody tracks a $14 pack of strings. Gear was lower than past years, partly because I sold one and partly because of the 30-day list. The surprise category was 'stuff bought to fix a problem that was actually my practice habits.' That category contains a clip-on tuner I already owned. Twice. Not quitting, not ashamed of having a hobby. But there's now a monthly number, and anything guitar-shaped comes out of that line or doesn't happen. Anyone else put a real budget on a hobby? Did it make the hobby worse?

Ours is labelled 'fun, no questions', and the house rule is nobody comments on how the other one spends it as long as it stays inside the line. It made the hobbies better, because the guilt left. The money was going to be spent anyway. Now it's spent on paper first.
