No-spend July, week one report: the wishlist grows but the wallet sleeps

Trying a no-spend month for everything non-essential. Groceries, bills, gas: fine. Gear, gadgets, takeout, 'small treats' that are somehow $23: paused until August. Week one findings: the urge doesn't disappear, it just gets funnelled into the wishlist, which now has six items including a delay pedal that's $249 USD, and my brain keeps refusing to do the exchange rate honestly because the honest number ends the conversation. Meanwhile the amount I HAVEN'T spent this week is genuinely embarrassing to compute against a normal week. The surprising part: the wanting comes in waves and the waves pass whether or not I buy anything. Who knew. Everyone. Everyone knew.

The exchange rate dishonesty is a documented phenomenon in my household too. My wife calls US prices 'advertising' and the converted price 'the truth'. The truth is usually about a third more and twice as sobering.

The waves passing on their own is the entire secret and it took me years to trust it. The want feels permanent at minute one. It is almost never alive by day three. Wishlists are just wave-measurement instruments.

Rooting for you. Week two is the hard one in my experience, week one runs on novelty. Report back.
