LPT: Put the gym clothes on before you decide whether you're going. Getting dressed is the whole workout you have to win.

I started at zero and I still count from there, and the single biggest thing that keeps me consistent isn't motivation, it's a dumb trick: I never let myself decide "am I working out today" while sitting on the couch. That's a rigged court. Instead the only decision I'm allowed to make is "am I putting the workout clothes on," and that's it. Nine times out of ten, once the shoes are on, going is easier than taking them back off and admitting defeat to nobody. The clothes do the arguing for you. You've lowered the real decision from "do I have the discipline for a full workout" to "do I get changed," and getting changed is a two-minute task, not a character test. Works for the small stuff too. "Am I going for a walk" is hard. "Am I putting on my walking shoes" is easy, and the shoes tend to finish the sentence.

Gym at 6, pancakes at 7, and this is exactly how I get to the 6 part. I lay the clothes out the night before, right next to the bed, so the very first decision of the day is already made and half-executed. Morning me is an idiot and I don't let him vote on important things.

Runner here: the shoes-finish-the-sentence thing is painfully accurate. I've never once laced up fully intending to run and then just stood in the driveway. Getting to the driveway dressed IS the hard part. The 21 km is just what happens after you lose the argument with the shoes.

"Lose the argument with the shoes" is going on a sticky note. That's the whole method in six words.

This generalizes way past the gym. My travel version is "I'm not deciding whether to go to the airport early, I'm just putting my shoes on and grabbing the bag by the door." Front-loading the tiny action when you're tired and weak-willed, instead of relying on a big decision later, is the whole trick and it works on everything.

Same principle got me doing the dreaded basement chores, honestly. "Fix the whole list" is a character test I fail on the couch. "Go down and grab one tool" is a two-minute task, and somehow I'm down there for an hour once I've started. Shrinking the first decision until it's too small to refuse is the sneakiest good habit there is.

Came back to say I tried the clothes-first thing for a week and it's disgusting how well it works. Put the shoes on 'just to see,' ended up training four days straight. The shoes are undefeated. You were right.
