Beer league ended and my cardio retired with it. Dryland training week one, send thoughts.

Season wrapped in the spring, and between the golf 'exercise' and patio season my engine has quietly left the building. Skated a summer drop-in last week and needed a personal intermission halfway through my second shift. A defenceman should not be gasping like that. My hands were never good but my lungs used to show up. So: dryland era begins. Bike intervals twice a week, some squats and sled pushes, one long easy cardio day. Goal is to show up in September and have the legs lie about my age instead of confessing it. Anyone else grinding the off-season or is it just me and my wounded pride?

The second-shift gasp is universal, every summer skate has six guys hiding it and two guys honest about it. Respect for being the honest one. Bike intervals are the fix, hockey shifts are basically interval training wearing equipment.

Sled pushes are the most hockey-shaped exercise in the gym, good pick. Low skill, high effort, legs and lungs together, zero technique to overthink. The sled also doesn't care about your day, which you will come to love.

September you is going to be so smug and it will be entirely deserved. The guys who skip summer always find out in October, one shift at a time.

Being the smug guy in October is honestly 80% of the motivation and I'm not ashamed. The other 20% is fear of the second-shift gasp.

Week one status check: are the legs still filing complaints or has the sled negotiated a settlement? Asking for accountability purposes, as is tradition in this room.
