A class trip got on my streetcar holding a walking rope, and by the third stop the teacher had counted one extra kid
About twenty grade twos got on at Parliament, each hanging onto a loop of one of those walking ropes. The car was packed. When it lurched, a man in a suit reached for the pole, missed, and caught a loop on the rope instead. The teacher counted heads at every stop. At the third one she got one extra. The whole car went silent while she followed the rope with her eyes, loop by loop, all the way up to his tie. He looked down, said "oh," and did not let go, because the car was still moving and he had made his choice.

He let go at St. Andrew, handed the loop back to the teacher with a small nod like he was returning a library book, and walked into the subway. A professional to the end.
