Hosted a clothing swap instead of doing fall shopping. Nine people, one living room, zero dollars.

Every September my brain goes 'new season, new wardrobe' like I'm a department store flyer. This year I redirected the fever. Invited friends over last night, everyone brought clothes they don't wear anymore, we sorted it all by category across the couch and the floor, and took turns picking one item per round so nobody could clear out the sweater pile in one sweep. I ended up with a wool sweater, two pairs of work pants that actually fit, and a rain shell with the tags still on. Someone else got the jacket I'd been guilt-keeping for three years and put it on immediately, which felt better than any sale I've ever found. Leftovers go to the donation bin this afternoon so nothing lingers. Total spent: chips and a jug of cider. Would host again, and next time I'm doing it before holiday party season.

One item per round is the rule that makes it work. Without it, the most confident person in the room leaves with a full garbage bag and everybody else gets a scarf.

Our rink does this every fall with equipment and for goalie parents it's honestly the only reason we can keep going. Kids outgrow pads long before they wear them out. The swap table has saved us more than any sale ever has. Stealing the clothing version for the team parents.
