ELI5: why does helium make your voice squeaky? And is it true it doesn't actually raise the pitch?
Someone told me the helium-voice thing is a myth in a way — that it doesn't change the note you're singing, just the sound. That broke my brain a little. If the pitch is the same, why does it sound like a cartoon chipmunk?

Your voice has two parts: the vocal cords, which vibrate to set the actual pitch, and the tube of your throat and mouth, which acts like an echo chamber that emphasizes certain frequencies. Those emphasized frequencies are called formants, and they're a big part of your voice's 'timbre' — the thing that makes it sound like you. Helium is much lighter than air, so sound travels faster through it. That shifts the resonances of that echo chamber upward, boosting the higher frequencies. Your vocal cords are still vibrating at basically the same rate — the note is unchanged — but the tube on top is now flavouring it toward the squeaky end. So: same pitch, different resonance.
So the cords are the string and the mouth is the guitar body, and helium swaps the guitar body for a smaller, tinnier one. That reframes the whole thing for me. Thank you.
The simple version for anyone who glazed over: light gas, sound moves faster, the echo-chamber part of your voice gets tuned higher. Note stays, tone changes.
Worth the safety footnote since this always comes up: there's a heavy gas (sulfur hexafluoride) that does the opposite — makes your voice sound deep and booming — and people love demoing it. Both party tricks carry the same real risk: they displace the oxygen you need, and a lungful means you're not breathing air. Fun to know how it works; not something to actually go inhaling.
The formants explanation stuck with me all week. I keep thinking about how my voice is basically a note played through a specific-shaped tube, and everyone's tube is a little different. That's why we recognize each other on the phone even over a bad line.
