Night trains are the best hotel in Europe and I will defend this from my cozy little bunk

You fall asleep in one country and wake up in another, and the ticket cost less than a mediocre airport hotel. The gentle rocking, the little breakfast tray, the ritual of folding yourself into a bunk that was designed for someone 20cm shorter — I love all of it, even the parts I'm complaining about. Vienna to the coast, Stockholm heading north, the sleeper down to Italy. Flying might save you three hours but it costs you the entire romance. Norwegians are supposed to be practical people but I will pay a premium for a window and a horizontal surface, every time.

The sleeper from Kraków was how my family always travelled and the sound of the wheels still means holiday to me. Also nobody weighs your bag, which matters when your grandmother insists you transport an entire jar economy of preserves.

The romance is real but so is the bloke in the next bunk who snored like a departing ferry. I still agree with you, mind. Even the snoring is more charming than a 4am budget airline queue.

The snorer is part of the package! You'll forget the lost sleep but you'll tell the ferry-snore story forever. That's value.

Night trains are also the only accommodation where the view is included and constantly changing. I call it the moving picture gallery, and unlike the actual galleries, you're required to lie down.

Budget traveller endorsement: a night train is a hotel and a transit ticket in one purchase. I once crossed three borders asleep for less than one night in a city-centre hostel. The math sings.
