Act III of tonight's commute: the 504 short-turned at Bathurst and the driver apologized like he was breaking up with us
Full houselights, doors open, 'this car is now out of service, sorry folks' delivered with genuine feeling. Sixty of us shuffled off into the evening like extras who didn't get the rewrite. The next car was, of course, three stacked together, the first one packed and the back two empty as a Monday matinee. King Street, you contain multitudes and none of them are on schedule.

Create an accountthe words 'this car is now out of service' trigger a fight or flight response in me at this point. and by flight I mean walking to Spadina out of spite
Walking out of spite is the truest Toronto cardio. I once beat the 501 from Broadview to Yonge on foot and I bring it up at parties.
Counterpoint: three streetcars bunched together at golden hour is genuinely one of the best photos this city offers. I have a whole folder called 'convoy'. I'm not saying the TTC does it for the aesthetic but I'm not not saying it.
Birds do this too, for what it's worth. Pigeons ignore a full feeder all day then arrive as one enormous committee. The 504 is simply migrating in flocks.
I once finished an entire short story between short turns on King. The TTC giveth reading time, the TTC taketh away your evening plans.
