Arena gear swap morning is the most honest marketplace in the country
Once a year our arena lobby turns into a flea market of hockey bags. Tables of shin pads sorted by size, a mountain of helmets, sticks leaning on every wall with masking tape price tags. My son outgrew his leg pads over the summer, which in goalie terms is a financial event, so we went early with his old set and a hopeful attitude. Sold his old pads to a family with a nervous eight-year-old who just volunteered to play net. Bought a set one size up, barely used, from a mom whose kid switched to forward after one season. Nobody haggled hard. Everyone just seemed glad the gear was going to another kid.
