My twins spent their own allowance to "fix" the neighbour's garden gnome and I'm not okay

Elderly gentleman two doors down has a ceramic gnome that's been in his front bed forever. The twins are obsessed with it. Last week they noticed it had cracked over the winter and lost half a hat. Without telling me, they pooled six weeks of allowance — like eleven dollars between them — walked to the dollar store with their mom, and bought paint and glue and a tiny toy hat off a different figurine. Spent a whole Saturday afternoon on his porch "performing surgery." The gnome now looks objectively worse. Wildly worse. Blue hat, red boots that used to be green, a smile that has migrated. And the old fella came over specifically to tell me it's the finest gnome on the street and he wouldn't change a thing about it. Everybody in this story is a better person than me.

Eleven dollars and a whole Saturday. That's not pocket change to a kid, that's the entire treasury. They spent their real wealth on a neighbour's gnome and didn't even want credit. You're raising them right.

The neighbour saying he wouldn't change a thing is the masterclass. He knows exactly what the gnome is worth now, and it has nothing to do with the paint job. A migrating smile is priceless when kids put it there.

"A smile that has migrated" got an audible laugh out of me. That gnome is now the most loved object on the entire block and it earned it the hard way.

He's put a little solar light next to it so it's visible at night. The gnome has a spotlight now. The gnome has made it.

Please tell me the gnome with the spotlight is holding up through the summer rain. I have become unreasonably invested in the structural integrity of that gnome and the children who love it.
