The crosswalk by my place goes cuckoo when you cross one way and chirps when you cross the other, and it's on purpose
Cuckoo means you're crossing north-south, chirp means east-west, so someone who can't see the signal can tell which street they're about to cross. I've walked through that intersection for years and only noticed because the dog stopped to stare at the speaker.

Birder here, and I'll confess the cuckoo crosswalk has turned my head more than once. The cuckoos we actually get in Canada don't even sound like that. I knew. I turned around anyway.
