"Glass is a slow-moving liquid" — the old-church-window claim, and why it's actually wrong

You've probably heard that the wavy old glass in medieval cathedral windows is thicker at the bottom because glass is secretly a very slow liquid that has flowed downward over centuries. It's a lovely story. It's also wrong, and the reason is a nice bit of materials science. Glass is what's called an amorphous solid: its atoms are disordered like a liquid's, but they're locked in place — it doesn't have the neat crystal structure of, say, quartz, but it also doesn't flow at room temperature on any timescale that matters. Studies estimating the viscosity of window glass put the flow so absurdly slow that it would take vastly longer than the age of the universe to sag visibly. Ancient Roman glass vessels, far older than any cathedral, show no such drooping. The real reason old windows are uneven is the manufacturing. Before modern float glass, panes were made by spinning or blowing molten glass, which produced sheets of uneven thickness. Glaziers, sensibly, often installed the heavier edge at the bottom. So the thick-bottom pattern is a glazier's choice, not gravity's slow victory. Materials scientists bring this one up constantly because it's such a perfect example of a plausible-sounding mechanism that just doesn't survive the numbers.

The Roman glass point is the knockout blow and I wish it led every telling. If glass flowed measurably at room temperature, two-thousand-year-old artifacts would be puddles, and they simply aren't. When your hypothesis makes a prediction that older samples flatly contradict, the hypothesis is done.

"Amorphous solid" is such a great category because it messes with the tidy solid/liquid box people carry around. The atoms are arranged like a liquid but behave like a solid. Nature keeps refusing to fit our vocabulary and I respect it.

Filing this next to the church-window myth in my head as a matched pair: a beautiful mechanism that's completely wrong, versus reading starlight, a preposterous-sounding mechanism that's completely right. Plausibility and truth are just not the same axis, and this hobby keeps teaching me that.
