The worst possible time to learn where your main water shutoff is, is while water is actively coming through the ceiling. Ask me how I know. In a 1962 house, I've had that particular education more than once. So on a calm Saturday: walk the house, find the main water shutoff, the individual shutoffs under every sink and toilet, the water heater's valve, the gas shutoff, and the electrical panel. Photograph each one, and photograph the panel with the breakers clearly labelled. If your breakers AREN'T labelled, that's your actual weekend project, because "the mystery breaker" is a tax you pay every single time something trips. Put all the photos in one album on your phone called something obvious like "HOUSE - EMERGENCY." Text it to your partner or roommate too, because the emergency doesn't check who's home. Ten minutes now against a flooded floor and a frantic phone call later is the best trade in home ownership.

I've found "kitchen" breakers that ran a bedroom and a garage freezer. An hour with a helper and a lamp saves you from tripping the wrong one during the exact emergency where that matters.

Did this whole walkthrough the next dry day out of pure trauma. Ten out of ten, would not recommend the alternative.
