You can tell it's mid-July downtown because you can get a patio table at 12:05
Half the town is on leave, the buses are running light, and the out-of-office replies have reached full bloom. The city is on a skeleton crew and the skeletons are all at a cottage on Big Rideau. Honestly, downtown in July is the city at its best. Quiet, sunny, and everyone left behind is in a suspiciously good mood.

Create an accountThe July out-of-office is a literary genre of its own. 'I will have limited access to email' — you're at the lake with full bars and we both know it. Enjoy it, you've earned it, leave me the patio.
'Limited access' is carrying more weight than any phrase in the language, and I'm including 'final draft.'
Toronto never does this and I resent it deeply. Our downtown doesn't empty in July, it just adds a heat shimmer and a second festival. Enjoy your table at 12:05 — I'm reading this from a lineup.
