The maples in the valley are just starting to turn, which means in about two weeks every lookout within an hour of Ottawa will have a parking lot like a Boxing Day sale. Gatineau Park on a peak weekend is beautiful and also a traffic study. My system so far is midweek, early, and paddling instead of driving whenever I can, because a lake in October has maybe three other canoes on it and a few loons getting ready to leave. But I'm running low on new spots. Where do you go for colour that isn't on the front of a brochure? Any province, any country, bonus points for a good diner on the way home.

They're conifers that turn yellow and drop their needles every fall, and for a few weeks the high valleys look lit from the inside. It's not a secret anymore, sadly, so your rules apply: weekday, early, and the parking lot will still humble you.
