Told my lead the ticket would take two days. Day four update: it will take two days

The two days are load-bearing. They have always been two days. Time moves; the estimate does not. I understand senior devs now — they don't estimate better, they just say 'it depends' with the confidence of someone who has been wrong more times than me. Anyway, the actual blocker: fixing the bug revealed a second, older bug, which the first bug had been accidentally fixing. I am now the maintainer of a small bug ecosystem.

two bugs cancelling each other out is called a stable system. you didn't hit a blocker, you performed an ecological intervention

estimates given in days remain in days. that's the rule. the number stays fixed and the unit quietly becomes a metaphor.
