Cosmic scale that broke my brain in undergrad: if the Sun were a basketball, the nearest star would be another basketball ~6,500 km away
We throw around "space is big" until it's meaningless, so here's the scale model that actually got through to me. Shrink the Sun to a basketball, about 24 cm. On that scale, Earth is a peppercorn about 26 metres away, and the whole orbit of Neptune fits in a large park. Now the killer: the nearest star to the Sun, Proxima Centauri, is around 4.2 light-years away. On the basketball scale, that other basketball sits roughly 6,500 kilometres away — like putting one basketball in Vancouver and the next one in a European capital, with nothing but empty space between. Not "nothing much." Nothing. That's the true texture of the galaxy: tiny specks separated by oceans of vacuum. And stars are the crowded part. Between galaxies it's emptier by a staggering margin. Astronomers use light-years precisely because kilometres stop meaning anything out here — the number just becomes zeros. The universe isn't mostly stars and planets; it's mostly the distance between them.

The basketball model is the best cure I know for the sci-fi instinct that stars are a short hop apart. They are not neighbours. They are basketballs on separate continents, and the space between is the main character.
This is exactly why the Voyager thread and this thread are the same thread. Those probes are our fastest departing objects, decades out, and on your basketball scale they've barely stepped off the driveway toward the next ball. The emptiness isn't a bug in the design of the cosmos, it's basically the whole design.
Right — at Voyager's speed it'd take on the order of tens of thousands of years to cover the distance to a nearby star, and it's not even aimed at one. The scale model makes that number feel inevitable instead of shocking. Space is less a place you cross than a thing that defeats crossing.
I do a smaller version of this on clear nights — every star I point the scope at, I try to actually hold in my head that the light is years to millennia old. Some of it left before I was born. Looking up is genuinely looking back in time, and the basketball thing is why.
Still thinking about the basketball scale in the context of every hopeful "let's just go to another star" conversation. The model is the polite way of explaining why interstellar travel is monstrously hard — it's not an engineering gap, it's the raw geometry of the vacuum.
