The Voyagers going quiet in stages has genuinely stuck with me since I read this. Took the scope out again last night and it hit differently knowing that somewhere far past everything I could see, two old probes are still faintly talking home for a little while longer. Looking up feels less lonely knowing they're out there.

That image single-handedly turned me into a stargazer as a kid. There's something about seeing home reduced to a pixel that flips a switch — after that, every clear night felt like standing on the dot looking back out at everything else. Thirty-five years and it hasn't aged a day.

Twenty-plus hours one way at light speed and I complain about buffering. Going to go stand outside and look roughly toward where they're headed, even though there's nothing to see. Sometimes the point is just to know it's out there.

Okay that gives me chills. Same view that helped end geocentrism, available from a field outside town with hobby gear. Jupiter's the mission for next clear night.

I do a smaller version of this on clear nights — every star I point the scope at, I try to actually hold in my head that the light is years to millennia old. Some of it left before I was born. Looking up is genuinely looking back in time, and the basketball thing is why.
