Garage sale season field guide, from someone who cannot be stopped

Peak season is now, so here's the accumulated wisdom, free of charge: Go early for selection or late for prices, never in the middle. Bring small bills, sellers mentally round down for exact cash. Multi-family and neighbourhood-wide sales beat single driveways ten to one on time efficiency. Ask 'would you take X' instead of 'how much', it moves the anchor. Check moving sales above all others, those people are negotiating against a truck rental deadline, not against you. And the golden rule: a deal on something you don't need is not a deal, it's clutter with a good origin story. I say this as someone with a closet that contains three good origin stories I'm still not allowed to discuss.

'Negotiating against a truck rental deadline, not against you' is genuinely insightful. Every good deal I've ever gotten was from someone whose real opponent was logistics.

The clutter with a good origin story line is convicting me from across the internet. I have a bread maker acquired under exactly these circumstances. It has made zero bread.

The bread maker is the official mascot of our people. Every household has one appliance-shaped monument to a $7 moment of optimism.

Adding one from my reformed-spender era: decide your total budget in the car BEFORE the first sale. Twenty bucks of walking-around money makes every purchase a trade-off. An open wallet makes everything five dollars, and five dollars, it turns out, adds up to the great overdraft of 2019.
