Full patio setup for $45. Yard sale season is here and I am unwell.

Saturday route, six sales, and behold: a solid wood patio table ($20, needs one sand and re-stain), four stackable chairs ($10 for the lot), a barely used umbrella ($10), and a string of patio lights ($5, all bulbs working, tested them right there off the guy's garage outlet like a professional). Same vibe at the big box store was pushing $700 before tax. The table's getting refinished next weekend which is $15 of stain and a very satisfying afternoon. Total: $60 all-in for a patio I actually want to sit on. July evenings, you may proceed.

Testing the lights off his garage outlet is the kind of due diligence that separates the pros from the people who get home with a mystery box of disappointment. Respect.

DIY guy passing through: when you refinish that table, do a light sand, wipe it clean, and use an exterior stain with UV protection or the sun will eat your work in one season. The good stuff costs a few bucks more and lasts three times longer. Ask me how I know.

The 'versus retail' math is my favourite genre of victory. $60 against $700 is a 91% discount for the crime of being patient and awake on a Saturday morning.

Patient, awake, and armed with exact change. Sellers at hour one respect a person with small bills.

During my payoff years the entire apartment got furnished this way and honestly half of it is still here because it turned out to be better built than anything I could've bought new at the time.

Went to my first yard sales this weekend partly because of this post. Came home with a $6 side table and an inflated sense of my own cleverness. I understand the addiction now.
