How a gravity assist works, minus the hand-waving: the spacecraft really does steal speed from a planet

My whole handle is this maneuver so let me actually explain it, because "slingshot" makes people picture a rubber band and it's not that. A gravity assist is how missions like the Voyagers reached the outer solar system without needing impossibly huge rockets — they borrowed energy from the planets themselves. Here's the honest mechanism. Relative to the planet, the spacecraft comes in and leaves at the same speed — the planet's gravity just bends its path, no free lunch there. The trick is the frame of reference. The planet is itself hurtling around the Sun at tens of kilometres per second, and by flying behind the planet in its orbit, the spacecraft effectively gets dragged along and comes away faster relative to the Sun. The energy is real, and it's conserved: the spacecraft speeds up by a hair, and the planet is slowed in its orbit by an utterly immeasurable amount. You are, quite literally, stealing a sliver of a planet's orbital motion. Voyager 2's grand tour chained these together — Jupiter's assist flung it to Saturn, Saturn's to Uranus, and so on, a rare planetary alignment in the late 1970s making the whole relay possible. Without gravity assists, the outer planets would have taken decades longer to reach, if we could reach them at all. It's the closest thing orbital mechanics has to a magic trick, except it's just bookkeeping done honestly.

The frame-of-reference part is where everyone's intuition breaks and you handled it cleanly. "Same speed relative to the planet, faster relative to the Sun" is the entire puzzle, and once it clicks it's beautiful. The mission logs from the grand tour read like a heist movie precisely because that's what it was — a series of perfectly-timed borrowings.

The conservation bookkeeping is the reassuring part. Nothing's free — the planet pays, it just pays so little you'd never detect it, because it outmasses the spacecraft by factors with a lot of zeros. Momentum stays balanced to the last decimal. Physics doesn't do favours, it does trades, and this is a trade where one party never notices.

Exactly — it's the ultimate lopsided deal. The spacecraft gets a mission-enabling boost; the planet loses roughly the orbital equivalent of a rounding error. Both sides balanced the books and only one side cared.

The 1970s alignment detail always stops me. That particular arrangement of the outer planets comes around roughly once in a human lifetime and change, and we happened to have just barely built the capability to use it. A cosmic window opened and we were ready by a hair. That timing is its own small miracle.
