US airports ranked by 'I would actually eat here on purpose', from someone who lives in seat 34B

Top tier: anywhere in the Southwest with a real green chile situation, and Portland, because PDX somehow convinced actual local restaurants to move in. Honourable mention to any Texas airport where the barbecue is genuinely from the barbecue place and not 'inspired by' it. Bottom tier: the sad refrigerated sandwich case at whichever regional terminal I was in last week. The sandwich had been folded, somehow. The whole sandwich. What's the layover food you'd actually route through on purpose?

PDX is the correct answer and it's not close. Real local food, carpet with a fan club, and free water fountains that actually work. I've taken a longer connection through there on purpose and I regret nothing.

Booking the longer layover for the food is the frequent flyer version of taking the scenic route. Respect.

budget traveller take: the real move is knowing which airports have a grocery store on the transit line in. I've picnicked in more US terminals than I've dined in. Folded sandwich case never sees a dime from me

As a Canadian I'm mostly just impressed by the scale of it all. I once had a connection in Atlanta and I'm fairly sure the walk between gates crossed a time zone. The sweet tea at the halfway point was medically necessary.

Late addition for the rankings: any airport within striking distance of a mountain town counts the trailhead as terminal food in my books. I've eaten a summit sandwich on a layover. Different sport, same league.
