The first cold evening always sends me to the same shelf. What's on your autumn pile?

I needed a second blanket last night, which in my house is the official start of reading season. Persuasion comes down every autumn without fail. Anne walking out through the fading fields, quietly aching and pretending not to, is exactly the mood. This year I've added Something Wicked This Way Comes, which I somehow never read. Bradbury writes October like he's homesick for it. What goes on your pile when the evenings close in?

Rebecca, always. The fog, the house, the second Mrs de Winter who never even gets a first name. Perfect for a grey afternoon when you want to feel slightly haunted but not actually scared.

the narrator never getting her own name is such a quiet cruelty. I'd forgotten that. it's going back on the pile.
