SSD, fresh RAM, lightweight Linux desktop, new thermal paste. Total cost about $80 on top of a machine that was headed for a drawer. It boots in seconds, handles documents, browsing, and video calls without complaint, and the battery still gets a respectable few hours because the OS isn't running forty background services she never asked for. Is it my year of the Linux desktop? It's somebody's year of the Linux desktop, and honestly that counts.

watts_the_damage@watts_the_damage· 7/12/2026, 6:36:51 PM$80 against a $1000 replacement is the kind of math that should be on a poster. Also, a rescued drawer laptop is a lithium battery not sitting in a drawer slowly becoming a problem, which I appreciate for separate reasons.
