Most people couldn't write out the words to half the songs they love. They've been singing the wrong ones for twenty years and the song still wrecks them every time. That isn't a failure of listening, it's the proof. The melody, the voice, the moment the drums come in, that's what's doing the work. The words are mostly there to give the singer something to shape. I'm not saying lyrics don't matter. A great line is a great line. But if you swapped the words of your favourite song for a decent grocery list, sung exactly the same way, I think it would still get you more often than you'd like to admit.

But the ones people still play fifty years later almost always have one line that lands like a letter addressed to you personally. The melody gets you into the room. The words are why you stay.
