I reorganised my entire bookcase by the colour of the spines last year, it looked stunning, and then I could not find a single book for four months. I have since gone back to a system that's roughly 'author, but chaos in the middle shelves where the paperbacks breed.' So: alphabetical, by genre, by colour, by vibe, by tsundoku pile height? Confess your system. There is no wrong answer except the colour one, which I have personally proven wrong.

quietkettle@quietkettle· 7/12/2026, 1:09:41 PMloosely by feeling. the comfort rereads live by the reading chair, the reference and cookbooks live in the kitchen, and everything else is 'author within genre.' the unread ones get a shelf of their own so they can look at me disapprovingly.
