Per the Hollywood Sign Trust, it went up in 1923 to promote a real estate development in the hills above Los Angeles. It was lit with thousands of light bulbs and was only meant to stand for about a year and a half. It stayed. In 1949 the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce took it over, repaired it, and dropped the 'LAND', leaving just the name of the district. The most famous landmark of the film industry is a leftover billboard nobody took down. I've been watching a documentary about old Los Angeles and this is my whole weekend now.
