Things I smugly told Canadians I wouldn't miss about Britain, in order of how much I miss them

4. Proper crisps. The flavour range over there is unhinged and I said so at the time. I'd commit minor crimes for a prawn cocktail packet right now. 3. The pub as an institution. Not a bar. A pub. Carpet, dog, bloke doing the crossword, no music. There is no Canadian equivalent and I was a fool. 2. Beans as a breakfast right, not a curiosity. 1. Taking the train somewhere on a whim. Even a delayed, overpriced, apologetic British train still puts you in another city by lunch. That one I'd actually move back for. Almost.

This is the emigrant condition in one list. I make my own brown cheese jokes in Canada and then pay import prices for it at a specialty shop like it's contraband. You always miss the boring daily things, never the landmarks.

The whim-train is the real European luxury and nobody there believes it. My cousins complain about their regional trains constantly, from aboard the regional trains, on the way to the beach.
