Meal-prepping the exact same lunch for five straight days is a joyless way to eat and I don't get the cult around it

I know it saves money and time. I know the containers are satisfying to line up. But eating the identical rice-chicken-broccoli brick from Monday to Friday turns lunch into a chore you refuel with instead of a thing you look forward to. I'm not saying don't prep. Prep components — a big batch of a sauce, some roasted veg, cooked grains — and mix them into different meals. But five identical Tupperware bricks isn't discipline, it's just eating the same Tuesday over and over until Friday. Food is one of the few good things that happens every single day. Spending it on sameness feels like a waste.

Respectfully going to push back, because I'm one of your bricks people. The sameness IS the feature for me. I've already made a hundred small decisions by lunchtime and 'what do I eat' being pre-answered is a genuine relief, not a punishment. I don't need lunch to be exciting; I need it to be handled. That said, your 'prep components not meals' idea is a fair middle ground. Maybe I'm one roasted-veg tray away from converting.

Half agree. The brick isn't the crime — reheating the same brick five times is. Chicken that was pretty good on Monday is sad and rubbery by Thursday. If you're going to prep, prep the stuff that survives reheating (stews, braises, curries) and the sameness at least tastes intentional.

The reheating-degradation point is the strongest counter here and I'll concede it. A curry on day four is often BETTER. My whole grievance is really with the dry-chicken-brick genre specifically. Maybe my take is less 'don't meal prep' and more 'stop prepping foods that die in the fridge.'

Circling back to the meal-prep debate: the compromise nobody mentioned is prepping the same base but changing one thing daily. Same grain and protein, but a different sauce or topping each day costs five minutes and breaks the monotony. You keep the efficiency and dodge the Thursday despair.
