Autumn coat blowout has started and my vacuum has requested a transfer

Every fall the resident dog drops an entire summer coat in about three weeks to make room for the winter one, and the house becomes a snow globe of undercoat. Anyone with a double-coated dog knows the tumbleweeds. What's worked for me after a lot of years and a lot of fur: five minutes of brushing every day beats one heroic session on Sunday, and an undercoat rake pulls out what a slicker brush only skims. A bath followed by a thorough dry loosens a shocking amount. And please don't shave a double-coated dog to solve shedding. That coat insulates against cold and heat both, and it doesn't always grow back right. The cats are shedding too, less dramatically but with more commitment to black pants. If you ever see bald patches, sores, or nonstop scratching instead of just more fur, that's a vet visit, not a grooming problem.
