Seat 34B is my second home, and I've watched more than one person get stopped at check-in holding a passport that was perfectly valid. Valid as in not expired. But many countries require your passport to stay valid for a set stretch past your travel dates, often six months, and airlines check before they let you board. So the day a new passport arrives, open your calendar, find the expiry date, back up a full year, and set a reminder to renew. A year leaves room for processing times, a last-minute trip, and whichever country has the strictest rule. If you're booking holiday travel right now, take thirty seconds tonight to check. The Government of Canada's travel advice pages list entry requirements country by country. Much better to find out in September than at the counter in December.

Renewing in a panic because the trip is next week can mean paying extra for urgent service on top, if you can get an appointment at all. That calendar reminder is literally money.
