I had a long wait at a tire place and the magazine rack was pure chaos — car mags mixed with parenting mags mixed with three-year-old news weeklies, all crammed sideways. So I organized them. Cars together, home stuff together, spines out. Took me ten minutes and I felt great. A guy across the room watched the whole thing and said, not unkindly, "you know they're just gonna get messed up again, right?" And another woman muttered "some people can't relax." I wasn't bothering anyone! I improved the rack! But now I'm wondering if quietly rearranging someone else's space, even a tire shop's, is a weird thing to impose. Am I the jerk?

The guy's "they'll get messed up again" is technically true and completely beside the point — by that logic you'd never wash a dish. Entropy always wins eventually; that's not an argument against ten good minutes of order.

The only way this tips into jerk territory is if you'd started reorganizing another customer's actual belongings, and you didn't. Enjoy your tidy rack.
